(2:24)Scriptures we take out of context

um topic So today we're going to be talking about scripture that sometimes we take out of context ah my favorite topic and kind of giving proper context and breaking it down um to what like God actually intended for us I'm going to use my phone because I don't know it's off off the top of my head you don't know scripture off the top of your head it's okay that is a different conversation I'm just making sure so today the first we're going to start with um Philippians 43 which is a very very popular one it's very dear to tuna's Heart can you want me I can say that off the top of my head if you go ahead for I can do all things through Christ uh who strengthens me okay so

(3:05)Philippians 4:13: The truth behind the verse

what is your interpretation of that I didn't expect uh yeah PF what is your interpretation okay so so so if we're talking about the wrong interpretation right what is the general the general so mine mine actually is more um whatever it is I am whatever situation I'm in that I can overcome through Christ that strengthens me okay so if you if you read one of the things about scripture you should always remember is that there are things that are said before and after right which we generally call context and context helps you understand the meaning right there are there are all sorts of little little principles that theologians will use for example they'll talk about the law of first mention right in order to inter scripture you have to look at where or when it was first mentioned in the Bible and the interpretation in that original verse will give you a bit of clarity as to what it means in this verse and then like I said earlier you look at the verses that come before it and the verses that come after it and that will give you also a clue as to what it really means what a lot of people do is they take scripture out of context right they PLU out one line and remove it from the habitat in which it really exists and then come up with an interpretation that does not quite line up with what um um the Bible is saying and then if you want to go a little deeper you can then check what the original language is said right um you're reading from the New Testament um the original language in which it was written was Greek right so if you go into the Greek uh uh the original Greek text and you understand how to speak Greek or you understand Greek then you will get a better understanding of the verse now that verse Philippians 4:3 if you read from I think verse 11 it talks about Paul was talking to the church and um praising them for their contributions right and he was talking about how he has gone through periods where he had nothing and periods where he had a lot right so he was saying that I have basically been hungry and I have also eaten well but whichever one I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me so what Paul was saying is that I can endure hardship H right I can endure difficulty I can endure deprivation even right but I can also survive excess um David said a prayer in the Psalms I think he said God do not give me too little that I will curse you or too much that I will forget you and that's a problem people have sometimes when we don't have we forget God right we forget all the blessings with which he has blessed us because we're so focused on that which has not yet come and sometimes when we have we forget God because we're so busy living the life right enjoying the the blessings right

(6:07)Surviving abundance vs. adversity

so Paul is saying that in plenty right I can survive adversity when I don't have and when I have I can still survive that there is a surviving of abundance we would not use the word surviving and abundance in the same sentence but many of us we will do well in adversity but we forget God in times of abundance you know I've been teasing folks in church there's been a tech boom in the Dallas area um since the pandemic and a lot of people have made a lot of money work working multiple jobs but what you will notice is that as people have become more affluent right they have become less um interested in the things of God right their affluence then provides a form of security right a form of comfort a form of confidence that makes some people think that they don't need God anymore and Paul is saying that you know what when I don't have yeah I can survive that and when I do have I can survive that because of Jesus Christ that is giving me strength does that make any sense no it does actually awesome it does I feel like I don't really think about the the surviving abundance like like whenever I hear that verse of scripture it's kind of usually used when it's like oh something some some kind of difficulty like I can do all things but not necessarily like even when things are going extremely well like learning like to even to still honor God rever God and remember that even in the abundance he's the one who blessed me with this you're right and remember the Bible says that um do not forget the Lord thy God because it is he that giveth Thee the power to get wealth because there's a tendency when we are affluent when we're in abundance to actually forget the source of the abundance there's an illusion of power that affluent people have right that sometimes they have to be reminded that guy you have all this money but there's so much that money cannot do for you I mean we've heard of people who were billionaires who were famous who are powerful dying of sickness and disease now you will think that with money what disease can you not cure they quite a few right right um so yeah there's a

(8:25)Western comfort vs. Nigerian fervency

there's a and if you look at the Western World relative to what we call the developing countries I come from Nigeria and there a lot of churches in Nigeria and people are very fervent right in in their uh in their faith in quote right and you come to the west and you don't see that same level of fervency with the same people right in Nigeria you pray many times for electricity right you pray many times for security you pray many times for just you know getting from point A to point B yes basic necessities from from point A to point B in relative Comfort here in the west I can't remember the last time I said God please can I have electricity when I get home I said up like yes you know in in in decades right you know and in those little little things we remember God right but then we don't need God for those little little things anymore if we're not careful right we can get led into a place of complacency by comfort and abundance and that's something that you know I it's a struggle that I think many of us are not winning so would you say like the the the our situations when were quote unquote broke kind of allows us to be desperate for the things of God but when we now get from him there is this tendency to say okay thank you appreciate that I'm going do my own thing is that does that actually call into question like the motivation to to ask him in the first place okay so

(9:55)Is your prayer life just a transaction?

so the Bible says that if you have a need you should ask for your you know um The Lord's Prayer give us this day our daily bread so asking God to meet your need is not is not a bad thing right the problem is when the whole relationship with God is based off of what you're going to get from God right when it's a transaction right you talked about the things of God what are the things of God right what do you mean when you say the things of God are you talking about prayer are you talking about worship are you talking about uh fellowship with other believers are you talking about uh uh reading your Bible right if you doing all of those things simply because you want to get from God the minute you get from God do you really have to keep doing those things if I'm doing it as a means to an end when I get to the end why do I keep doing it right and that's the problem with the Prosperity Gospel right it does not engender or or Foster a relationship with God it Fosters a transactional mentality yeah give God ABC and God will give you efgh right and once I get efgh why why am I still doing ABC right why am I still jumping through the Hoops why am I still fasting for 40 days if I fasted for 40 days just so that I could get a better job now I've gotten the better job why am I fasting for 40 days yeah and that's a good I apologize I want to do a quick segue I don't know if you if you recall um you all check out previous episodes but you sh asked a question about okay so if God did not provide anything for us yeah right would we still work Shing right like do you what do you and this is I'm not obviously you can't speak for people right P for futter right your genuine opinion you've been in this yeah quote unquote game for a long time what do you think I think sorry finish yeah I was so so for me right there was a time in my

(11:45)The reality of my past Christianity

Christianity if I'm going to be really sincere with you um let's say five six years ago if God could not provide anything for me I would not worship him right I I I really wouldn't because worshiping God was just a constant a constant struggle right if it is not hard right it is not of God yeah um be carry your cross daily and follow me everything spoke about suffering right and difficulty you have to live an aesthetic lifestyle you can't go around just laughing you know just being happy you have to look you know like suffering yes you know look deprived right and and and you know you have to fast you have to wake up you are sleeping you know you can't sleep you they are witches they are Wizards you know they are fighting principalities you are fighting demons it was a very stressful life very very stressful you you don't know when the devil is coming to get you you know be careful how you walk you might fall in the you know there was just a constant fear of getting into trouble or finding yourself in a difficult place if you did not please God and then you know you're afraid of the devil you're afraid of evil people but you're also afraid of God right because you know if you test God you know he will strike you down he's a consuming fire you know behold the goodness and the severity of God right but I've come to realize that God did not save me in Christ Jesus just so that he can add material things to me right he saved me for a relationship right and he said the work is finished my favorite verse of

(13:40)Why the yoke of Jesus is meant to be easy

scripture Jesus Christ said come onto me or you that labor and heavy lading and I will give you rest learn from me for my yoke is easy and my burden is light if your Christianity is not easy if the burden that you carry is not light yeah are you yolked to Jesus or something else I feel like we should find the camera that for PF and it should just say that again directly no seriously if your Christianity is not easy I'll will say it again if think about it Jesus said my yoke my Jesus my yoke is easy my burden is light when he died on the cross he said it is finished why is my Christianity hard who am I yoked to so actually I wanted to good question like I I that just St way into since we're talking about out of context scripture the scripture that says I think it's like work out your um salvation so can we give proper context to that since we're talking about how Jesus says that you come to me okay so

(14:50)What 'Work Out Your Salvation' means

so walk out your salvation is not calculate your salvation you know when we were in school and they would give you a math problem right and you had to show the answer but also show how you got to the answer so they say walk it out the I like this I I I I like it I studied philosophy so you know how little I liked it what it saying is work out your salvation it say express it express it out leave it out live out your salvation live out the new life that is in you live out what God has done for you let your life be a demonstration of what God has done right and the fear and trembling that it speaks of there is not the fear and trembling that comes when you see a lion right when you see a robber with a gun right it's fear and trembling speaking about awe speaking about reverence speaking about worship right understanding the price that was paid for that salvation that you are working out yeah yeah thanks for saying that because I feel like it's a quick verse and people will say it like oh what are you doing you're supposed to work out right and why are we like sorry why are we easily predisposed to assume when we hear work we just assume that okay I must suffer I must lior I must you know I I I think you have to understand that we live in a world right that functions on a meritocracy yeah you get what you deserve you have what you work for anything good the world you have like you're an engineer right to be an engineer you have to go to school right you know some rubbish schools but I'm an engineer not by trade I graduated with an engineering degree okay well yeah you have an engineering degree okay so technically you're an engineer right right right so I'm actually a licensed professional engineer in the state of Texas Wooh liced love it one more fact only 20% of of Engineers go on to become licensed in Texas I am grateful to God for your life I'm just thank you much awesome awesome well yet you don't you're not an engineer yeah cuz I de okay theas let me answer the question my dad Liv when I was 5 years old oh my god wow wow wow that's the last one I promise that's the last one so this validation is helping me okay yeah so that's it I'm going go to what are we talking about we're talking about um why do Christians think of walk as suffering right because again it's a meritocracy right we live in a meritocracy everything you have we think you should earn yeah um you get a paycheck at the end of every two weeks you work for it if you don't work for it people will say you don't deserve it right if your job is easy you know kind of laid back they don't stress you people like Ah that's your job you know do you even work you know it's almost like it is you have to be sweating there's virtue in suffering right we Elevate suffering in a way that I don't think scripture meant to elevate suffering right what scripture elevates is our attitude in the suffering not necessarily the suffering itself right so when people think about the things of God they feel like there's virtue in it being difficult right but when God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites before Moses came down from the mountain they were already disobeying The Ten Commandments it was almost as if God was writing and they were misbehaving right yeah and that is the mentality we have that we must strive and work hard and suffer to keep the Ten Commandments right and then when you add to the Ten Commandments 6 and three laws of Moses found in Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Exodus 613 laws those are the things that when we focus on those things makes our journey with God difficult and hard 63 laws those are a lot of laws and you know if you break one you break all right and that is the mentality it is the mentality that we carried over from from Mount Si it's the mentality that we carried over from Judaism but what Jesus Christ is saying is that leave that mountain leave Mount Si we have come onto Mount Zion we're no longer in that place where we are our relationship with God is defined by the 613 laws of Moses but rather it is defined by our relationship with Jesus so he says my yoke is easy my burden is light but the 63 laws of Moses nothing easy nothing like going on there right fire and doom and judgment and death and Punishment right the Bible says that uh we we have come on to uh uh to Christ the the the the the the first born amongst many Brethren right we've come to a New and Living Way we've come to the city of God we've come to justment made perfect we've come to all of these beautiful and wonderful things right but how many Christians are really enjoying their Christianity let's be honest many Christians are wishing they could go somewhere when nobody knows them as Christians so they can just be and just live God put us on this planet not to endure it I don't believe that my life should be endured I believe my life should be lived right and all the opportunities God gives me to enjoy it yeah I think I should maximize right I think I should smell flowers I think I should appreciate sunsets you know enjoy my relationships and all the color that those relationships bring into my life but then there's a Christianity that says no you can't enjoy art you know you can't music if it's not bad music you know you can't enjoy it yeah what's okay what's bad music what bad music when you hear it you know it okay okay you know there there are schools of thought that would say show me your faith without your works and I know yeah talk it's part of those scriptures that sometimes um I don't know if it's taken out of context I don't know if it's just Cas it's not taken out of context again the Bible talks about that was a conversation um I think it was James yes was talking about um our works are the evidence of our faith right they are the evidence of our faith they are not the basis of our faith right evidence is different from basis yeah the basis of our faith is the finished work of Christ if you believe that Jesus Christ died for you if you are full of the Holy Spirit these are the things that you will produce these are the things that you will do right so so we can look at those things and we can say oh this person has Faith right but it is not those things that give him Faith they just show that he has Faith right right and you know it's like the fruits of the spirit yeah they are not the spirit that is not Christianity those are the outward manifestations right of the indwelling of the spirit so me being gentle is not what makes me Christian right me being kind is not what makes me a Christian I am a Christian because I believe that Jesus Christ died and Rose on the third day and when he died he paid for my sins the evidence the manifestation the fruit it's like if you have uh uh God forbid you have malaria oh that so many times okay oh yeah you're good you can okay let's say you have malaria and you have temperature the temperature is the evidence right that there's a something in your body symp is a symptom thank you is not the disease dise exactly but we have made the works the disease right we have made the the fruits the disease no they are the symptoms of the disease so if you've been infected by the Jesus bug and the Holy Spirit bug you will have a temperature of love and a temperature of kindness right but it's not like oh yeah you know you are kind therefore you're a Christian heck no there a lot of kind people who are not Christians yeah there are people who are really kind who are not Christians in fact the Bible says you can give your body to be burned and you don't have love yeah yeah yeah you can sell everything you have and you don't have love right it profits you nothing yeah but we like to focus on the outward manifestations right and use them not as a at best a a a a measure of okay where are you in your faith but rather as the definition of our faith that's not how the Bible says it yeah well thank you I sorry I'm just processing like we're we're talking like mentally processing everything you've been saying um okay so I'll give you another scripture and this is in the NLT version right this is Matthew 6 um 33 and it says seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need okay so so again NLT the message the living Bible they're great translations for understanding right but many times they are paraphrasing yeah and sometimes you have to be careful that in paraphrasing you don't um you don't lose the actual meaning and in that particular scenario yeah the meaning is um can get a little lost so do you mind reading from maybe the NIV yes okay I have the NIV but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well okay so seek first his kingdom and his righteousness remember the Bible says that we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus yeah the Bible talks about a righteousness that is of faith not the righteousness that is of works so when he says seek first his kingdom right he is saying seek Him and seek the righteousness that comes from him the righteousness that comes by faith the Bible says Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness the Bible says that we are the righteousness of God we are his righteousness when we are in Christ Jesus right so when he's talking about seeking first the kingdom of God he's actually saying to you seek Jesus right and seek the righteousness that comes with Jesus not the righteousness that comes from obedience again to the 613 laws right um um but when you read it from the NLT it implies that you should seek to be righteous that you by yourself should try and be righteous but the Bible says that all of our righteousness is as a filthy rag before God yeah and that by The Works of the law shall no man be justified there is no righteousness that you can present to God that is not corrupted by the nature of Adam on the inside of us right the only righteousness that is acceptable to God is the one that he gives us his righteousness yeah through Christ Jesus yes so he says seek you first the kingdom seek ye first Christ and the righteousness that comes with Christ and so I guess my next question would be and the everything else that is added um what is that because I feel like at least whenever I would read this it'd be like oh as long as I'm following Jesus all my desires will be given to me to like the house the car the increase in salary the job I need to follow him and then everything else that b they look s that kind of thing you're a married man I know I'm not saying me as hypothetically I just want to clarify no Vex no Vex I get house to now wend hi his wife's name is Wendy okay so so so so let's back up a bit can you read the verses preceding that verse it talks about very specific specific things and and and there's something I want to point out there yes so I'll start from um 28 and it says and why do you worry about clothes see how the flowers of the field grow they do not labor or spin yet I tell you that not even Solomon and all of his Splendor was dressed like one of these if that is how God clothed the grass of the field which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire will he not much more clothe you you of little faith so do not worry saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink what or what shall we wear for the pagans run after these things and your heavenly father knows that you need them but seek ye first the king okay so so food drink clothing clothing right you can wrap shelter up in clothing it's a covering what that verse is saying don't preoccupy yourself with chasing after material things right right God sees your need and he will provide for those needs if you can just focus your attention right or you should focus your attention rather on seeking Jesus and seeking um the righteousness that comes by by by by faith now I won't I won't limit it to food clothing uh uh uh shelter and those Basic Essentials because Essentials can be relative yeah live in Texas we're we're recording this podcast in Texas right now the temperature is what 106 10 feels like 190 feels like 190 is lot so so air conditioning for example I wouldn't look at it as a luxury in this temperature okay that makes sense the public transportation system in Texas is not great if you have a job right you need some kind of transportation to get to and from work um it expands depending on where you are right in Texas a car with air conditioning is actually a necessity right and I think that God will provide those for you yeah I think the promise of God is to provide that which we need now our desires our uh uh uh those are a different ball game Al together right those are a totally different conversation um I think that God loves us right which is evidenced by him sending his only begotten son to the Cross to die for us I don't understand how you can love somebody to the point where you would give your child for them that you would watch them starve right or you watch them B get baked in the Texas um in the Texas heat people say things like it's a like it's what if it's a test test of what I don't know maybe of you I don't know like I've read something hunger is a test like what if God is trying to test your faith or your loyalty or quote unquote like you know where he's not answering that prayer so you have to repeat the prayer like his death over and over again but that's not what the Bible says though I I know I'm just kind of and I guess I would also ask like but there are people who are in these situations right because also a lot of people that don't believe in God will then say how would God allow if there is a God and he's a good God how would there well how would he allow there to be orphans who are starving what is what's the definition of good that's a different episode show you foreshadowing for a different episode right so so so I was listening to um a podcast actually and a guy was talking about um Terrence Howard um actor was talking about multiplication right and multiplication he was talking about multiplication in the context of mathematics right and he was like one * 1 how can 1 * 1 be be one right since multiplication has implied in it increase 1 * one equals to one that's not increase so I don't know whether he was trying to prove some kind of contradiction or fallacy but what I got out of that um episode was that words mean different things in different context and the same word right multiplication can mean something else all together if you focus on it meaning just one thing right you could actually lose the whole intent of the speaker right so when we talk about a good god what does that mean right you and I think of goodness as vanilla and flowers and and lovely roses yeah but somebody would say I was a good father cuz I caused my child I disciplined my child and in that discipline the child experienced some pain and some discomfort I I where I come from that would be considered a good father right but in other places that would be considered an abusive father P for the audience where do you come from again I come from the west coast of Africa a little country called Nigeria okay okay can more specific uh a major major major Village called okay thank you so much there you go yeah you can go back I don't know if you get the point I'm trying to make right so we have to be very careful that we do not impose our standards on God our standards of good our standard of even our standard of morality that's good point on God right God is the standard and whatever God does is good period period even if we don't even if we don't understand it right even if we don't understand it if we don't like it whatever God does is good God say I don't do evil I don't do evil we do evil not like not like us but I mean human beings so I didn't know if that but you get the point right that so so there are people in the world who are starving but why are they starving are they starving because God did not provide right or are they starving because of the greed and the evil in the hearts of other men right have they um um are they seeking Jesus are they seeking his righteousness right are they seeking anything else I I don't know what's going on with the context right but I know what's going on with me I know what I'm seeking right and I know what I expect as a consequence of what I'm seeking but I'm not seeking God because of what I'm going to get from God I'm seeking God because I've come to a point in my life where I recognize that God is God right and he is worthy of Praise he's worthy of worship he's worthy of honor and he's worthy of my life right not what I can get from him [Music] anymore yeah before we wrap up uh we typically wrap up with like a make a case for right yeah and this actually you be proud of me actually came about during the conversation um which we appreciate by the way and anyone that's listening please give us five stars if you like the uh episodes and you are challenged spiritually right yeah five stars five stars five six um so make a case for God's make a case for just and for merciful and I'll give you the scenario right so there was a parable in the Bible where Christ is was the vineard workers right and this this ties into what we're talking about as far as effort and what's good or what's fair I guess quote unquote so there was uh the vineyard workers there was a group of people that owner of a Vineyard or Farm whatever iron right in the morning in the morning at 8:00 a.m. and they offered he offered them a certain amount yeah a full days wages they accepted it very happy with very happy with it very happy yep more than they had the day before more than awesome then at 12 had some more if I had I had some more right and then at like an hour to Wass close he hired some in fact he said I think he says what are you all doing standing around and they're like we haven't found work no one hire us okay bet I'll hire you right so when he was dishing out at the end of the day when they were done when he was dishing out payment quote unquote he gave the last people that he hired last right that worked an hour not the ones that worked eight he gave him full days wages so people that worked first were like if he gave these guys I worked an hour full days Wes me it's going to I mean what up what up of course and he gave all of them the same right he gave the person that walked an hour the same person that walked four as it says four the person that walked the F days work the same so make a case for just and I guess for Mercy because some people would say that's not fair and I would say well that was merciful to the person that okay so only works one so so look at it like this when you say the same I don't like that word the same right he gave them what he promised them he gave them what they agreed to that they are the same was a coincidence right so he said I would give the folks who are working 8 hours the folks in the morning I will give you let's say $100 they were very happy with it right they were just so excited by it they did not have $100 right then he found some other guys midday and he negotiated with them and gave them $100 too they were very happy with it then he meets some guys who literally they were going to go home with without any money right and he shows them mercy and he gives them a job even though it was for a couple of minutes and he negotiates with them and he gives them $100 now the guys in the morning who are very happy with their wage very content with it all of a sudden they see what he give other people right and then they get indignant right that is not a question of fairness that's a question of greed even though the hours it doesn't matter what anyone else gets what you signed up for is what you got I didn't give you less because of the other people I gave you exactly what we agreed to you actually are ungrateful because the other people that are introduced into the work reduce the amount of work that you have done that's a good point can you see where greed blinds our eyes that's a good point when the initial negotiation was done they assumed they were going to clear five acres let's say they were going to clear five acres by midday brought in some more guys so that 5 Acres had reduced so those guys in the morning were doing less work now the guys I bring in the last few minutes maybe all they are going to do is pack MH the Harvest into baskets right but that is what the guys at the beginning don't have to do but guess what they're so focused on what someone else has that they do not see the blessing that they have and when they complain to the master the man say what's your problem did I cheat you why is it your brother's blessing is now giving you heartb born and that is the way we work that is the way when God blesses us we're so grateful for the blessing until we see someone else's blessing and then we expect that God is matching blessings we don't realize we don't realize that everything that God gives us he has measured it against how he made us you know there's a verse of scripture that I love um it says delight yourself also in the Lord and He will grant you the desires of your heart when you hear delight yourself in the Lord people think it's walking out with a big smile on your face I'm delighted in the Lord that word delight comes from uh a Hebrew word that is pronounced anog a n o g I may not be pronouncing it right and it means to be pable to be yielded to be submissive to God and he will grant you the desires of your heart if you are pliable if you are submissive if you're yielded chances are your desires will align with his desires right and he will grant you those desires because your desires are in alignment with his desires for you and that is why there are many prayers that we pray that we don't get answers to that we don't receive because we are out of alignment in our prayers we're praying from a place of greed we're praying from a place of covetousness right and we expect God to rubber stamp everything simply because we've asked for it God is not anybody's Butler right he's not anybody's major DMO he is God he is the Almighty Mighty God he's the creator of the heavens and the Earth we align with him he doesn't align with us he is the unmovable mover we move he doesn't move right so when you're talking about Mercy right he showed Mercy to every single one of those guys that he called into the field right and he was just to each and every single one of them he was fair to all of them in fact they were unfair in questioning his Justice by implying that he cheated them by reducing their workload and keeping to his agreement just because quote unquote they started first in the morning and then he hadir those ones last so they if I was God I would tell those guys to put the stuff back on yes you guys okay finish the work but thank God I'm not God thank God I'm not God well sh you want to close us out PF I was going to say like when um PF was kind of explaining um that Parable I guess um I just kept thinking about how we do that like we'll be like oh you know I've been faithful or serving and then you see someone who maybe you're you have judged them in the past or you think they have a question questionable past and you're like God is blessing them why why are you blessing them I've been here I've been coming to church I've been praying I've been doing all these things but even just putting in the perspective of like but I have given you what I have promised you like don't look at anybody else look at me and have I done what I said I would do um but yeah thank you for this episode PF and I just hope that everyone goes home and they kind of just when they start reading scripture um they kind of just take a moment to read a little bit further down or before and try to contextualize what is going on and how um God is speaking and I hope that you guys are talking to other people because I think in isol ation which is why church is important and Community is important because in isolation you're not going to get all the Revelation right because we are all like it's in part we all we all see in part and and God has created us for each other so that we can have these discussions and kind of just expand and get to know him even better so thank you so much pfk you guys for joining us and we will see you on the next episode unfilter a
